Between decorations, commercials and shopping sales, it feels like the holidays are already here. While they are just around the corner, there’s still time to save before you spend! Here is a different kind of holiday list to get you through the season with your finances intact.
No matter how you go about your shopping, it’s wise to compare the prices of the gifts you plan to purchase at more than one retailer. If you are browsing at the Garden State Plaza, Riverside Square Mall or one of the many other shopping centers in Bergen County and neighboring areas in Northern New Jersey, this may require some extra walking or driving. If you are buying online, take advantage of sites that compare the prices of searched-for products at various online stores. Google Shopping is one of the most popular, but there are many others.
Cash in on Deals
There is no shortage of discount programs throughout November and December. When it comes to online shopping, here are three popular shopping days when looking for bargains:
Black Friday – taking place the Friday after Thanksgiving, Black Friday marks the unofficial beginning of the Christmas season. Virtually all retailers in the country, big and small, offer various sales and deals.
Cyber Monday – a Shop.org-coined term for the Monday after Thanksgiving, where thousands of offers and deals from over 800 retailers are offered throughout the holiday season. Cyber Monday is seen by many retailers, shoppers and the media as the official kick-off to the online holiday shopping season. It’s one way to avoid the bumper-to-bumper traffic for which Bergen County is known, especially this time of year.
Free Shipping Day – a one-day, online shopping event when thousands of merchants mail products at no charge. Now in its seventh year, Free Shipping Day takes place Thursday, December 18, near the tail-end of the shopping season with delivery by Christmas Eve.
Shopping online is easy and convenient but can come with significant shipping charges — sometimes even as much as the item you’re purchasing! Don’t overlook local, small businesses in your town and throughout North Jersey. Not only does supporting these businesses help your community, but you can put the money you would have spent on shipping toward other gifts … or, better yet, keep it in your savings account!
For the price of one gift you might buy at a store, you could purchase the supplies needed to make several spectacular gifts with a personal flare. You don’t need to know how to sew, knit or embroider to create something special. Sites like Pinterest offer endless ideas and inspiration. The search term, “homemade gifts,” for example, yields a range of ideas from candles and soaps to infused olive oils, custom mugs, jewelry, signs, and much more!
Pool Funds Together
If you know a friend or family member really wants something that’s beyond your holiday budget, team up with one or more people. You’ll have given the person something you know they really want and your wallet will be no worse for the wear.
