Whether you’re planning a vacation, a stay-cation, or just looking for ways to keep busy this summer, there are ways to do so within your financial means. Lucky for those of us living in New Jersey, we don’t need to travel too far for much of anything, from daytime activities for kids to beautiful and relaxing destinations along the Jersey Shore. Here are a few ways you can cautiously navigate summer spending, no matter what your plans are.
Keep it local
Look for affordable activities right in your backyard! For example, Bergen County Zoo at Van Saun County Park offers discounts to Bergen County residents. In addition to their regular offerings, they host all kinds of animal- and environment-centric events. This summer’s programs include World Oceans Day, Condor Day, Snake Day, Monkey Day, Owl Day, Elephant Day, and Cotton-Top Tamarins Day. Stories, crafts and other activities will take place each day from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., included with admission.
Take advantage of community offerings
You’ll be hard pressed to find a town in New Jersey that doesn’t have some sort of summer
programming, often for free! Take, for example, outdoor movie nights. In Bergen County alone you have at least three different series to choose from: Music and Movies Under the Stars at Fort Lee Community Center; Hackensack Movies Under the Starts at Atlantic Street Park; and Movies in the Park at Van Neste Park in Ridgewood. A list of outdoor movie and music nights throughout New Jersey is available thanks to New Jersey Family.
Save on travel
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics has stated that the largest travel expenses in years past have been for transportation. If your plans require travel via plane, train or automobile, you can start saving before you even arrive at your destination! These travel bloggers share some ways you can save money, from hidden airline deals and sharing economy to loyalty programs and finding cheap airfare.
Share with friends
Between travel, lodging, food and entertainment, vacationing can become a real investment. Save where you can! If you have friends or family living in a city you’d like to visit, find out when they are planning to go away and offer to house-sit. Maybe even head out a few days early to spend some quality time together before they leave! With this plan, you obviously save money on housing, but you also have a working kitchen allowing you to prepare meals at home instead of eating all your meals in restaurants. This may take a little coordination with timing, but it’s a win-win if you can make it work.
Don’t forget the small-ish stuff
Avoid last minute surprises by trying your best to account for all costs associated with the activities you’re planning. This includes things like tax, tips, and baggage fees if you’re flying (in most cases).
Plan [way] ahead
Putting away a little money here and there over the course of a year is usually a lot easier than scrambling to pull a lump sum together at the last minute. NVE’s Universal Club Account is designed specifically to help you save for special occasions. Our disciplined savings program allows you to make fixed, periodic deposits to your account over a 12-month period and the total amount of your deposits, plus interest, is then credited back to your checking account.
There are plenty of reasons — and seasons — to start saving. NVE Bank is here to help with a wide range of products and services to help you reach your goals. Visit www.nvebank.com or visit one of our neighborhood branches, conveniently located throughout Bergen County, to speak with one of our Branch Associates.
