How to Support Local Business on National Mom and Pop Business Owners Day

This year, National Mom and Pop Business Owners Day falls during trying times. As a business with headquarters in Englewood, New Jersey and branches through Bergen County, NVE Bank stands with our local Chambers of Commerce in the mission to give local businesses a fighting chance as they do their best to get through the COVID-19 health crisis. Here are some of the ways you can help.

Rally for Restaurants

Support Rally for Restaurants, a movement created to support your favorite restaurants. Here’s how you can participate. First, simply visit the website, rallyforrestaurants.com and search for the restaurants you love. You can search by name or location. Once you find the restaurant you want to support, you’ll see a button to “Order Online,” “Buy Gift Card” or both. You decide how you want to give, whether it’s ordering takeout for your family or buying a gift card for a friend or for your own future use. Then, tag #RallyforRestaurants and the restaurant you supported on social media to bring awareness to the cause. Participants are also encouraged to tag family and friends who may be interested in following suit. When you do share your contribution on social media using #RallyforRestaurants and tag the restaurant, Rally for Restaurants will give  one dollar to organizations supporting the community through Toast.org (up to $250,000).*

Buy Now for Later

Gift certificates are an excellent way to support all kinds of small businesses, not just restaurants. During a time like this, gift card purchases improve cash flow for a business. So, while you may not need, or be able to get products from that business right now, you’re doing your part to help guarantee they’ll be around in the future when you can.

Get It to Go

Even if you don’t participate with an organized movement like Rally for Restaurants, many restaurants, cafes and other food establishments are offering delivery, curbside pickup and contactless delivery options. Here’s a directory of restaurants and corresponding services in Englewood.

Be a Part of the Recovery Process

If you are holding off on making purchases during this pandemic, consider how you might support local businesses after it ends. The sooner cash starts flowing back into the local economy, the more likely our local businesses are to survive.

Shop Online

Sheltering in place to prevent the spread of Coronavirus is the priority right now, but don’t forget that many small businesses offer online shopping options. Because times are hard, many of those businesses are also offering sales, discounts and other special offers to stimulate purchases. Think about what you might be shopping for under normal circumstances as the warmer weather begins to roll in. Now is a great time to support local retailers while benefiting from these promotions.

Spread the Good Word

One of the best things you can be, besides a customer, is an advocate. If you’re not financially in a position to be able to support local businesses at this time—and even if you are—a great, free way to help is to leave reviews on websites like Facebook, Google, and Yelp. Or if you notice someone you’re connected with on social media is looking for a service, recommend a local business you’ve used and feel comfortable referring them to.

When all this is behind us, we’re going to want our local businesses to be around for us to enjoy. Please consider showing support however you are able.

*Toast, via its philanthropic arm Toast.org, will donate $1 per eligible social media post, up to a maximum of $250,000. To be eligible, social media posts must use the hashtag #RallyforRestaurants and tag (@mention) the restaurant whose gift card was purchased. Toast will match up to 20 eligible social shares per person. Donations will be distributed evenly between the Restaurant Workers’ Community Foundation and World Central Kitchen.
